Yes, the Sound Lock Adjustable Door Seal Kit works by sealing every gap around a solid core door. A 1-3/4" thick, 7 lb per sq ft solid core door tests up to STC 45 once it is fully sealed. Heavier doors reach higher, up to STC 51. A seal only works when it is airtight. Check each rubber seal with a flashlight after you install it, because visible light means sound can get through.

The Sound Lock Adjustable Door Seal Kit works on solid core wood or metal doors. The jamb needs about 1-1/2" of flat space for the seal channel. The bottom seal should only drop a maximum of 3/8". The kit works by sealing the gaps around the door, which makes the door construction the weak point. We do not recommend installing the kit on a hollow core door or a louver door, so a solid core door is needed for the kit to work effectively. If your door has a window, that window will be the weak point. Generally, double-pane glass thicker than 1/8" is recommended. Order one kit per door and measure each door on its own, since doors are often not square. The jamb seal channels cut to any length, so the standard jamb sets fit almost any opening. The bottom seal is the part to size carefully. Measure the gap under your door to ensure the gap is 3/8" or less. Choose a bottom seal that covers your door width, then trim it during install. Bottom seals from 18" to 24" are custom ordered, which means a potentially longer lead time for the kit.

The Sound Lock Adjustable Door Seal Kit includes a set of adjustable Sound Lock Door Jamb Seals for the hinge side, strike side and top of the door, plus an automatic drop-down Sound Lock Door Bottom Seal. A standard 36" x 84" set is one 36" piece and two 84" pieces. Wood screws are included.

Install the Sound Lock Adjustable Door Seal Kit in this order:

1. Measure each side of the frame on its own.
2. Pull the rubber back and cut the aluminum channel to length with a miter saw and a carbide-tip blade. Cut the metal only, not the rubber.
3. Hold each jamb seal against the frame with the door closed, then open and close the door to confirm the rubber does not bind.
4. Drill the center mounting hole with a 1/8" bit, screw the seal in, then work outward to the ends. Mount the side seals first, then the top.
5. Adjust the rubber with the perimeter screws, which sit about every 12". Slide a piece of paper between the neoprene and the door, and turn each screw counter-clockwise in quarter turns until the paper is held snugly. Never force a screw clockwise.
6. Cut the bottom seal metal on the end without the actuator screw. Trim the rubber separately with scissors, leaving it slightly longer than the channel.
7. Rest the bottom seal on 3/8" thick spacers with the actuator screw toward the hinge side. Screw it in starting at the center hole, without overtightening.
8. With the door open, back out the actuator screw a half-turn at a time until the seal just blocks light under the door.
9. Seal gaps around the rough opening with acoustical sealant. Use a foam backer rod under the sealant for medium and large gaps.

The Sound Lock Adjustable Door Seal Kit comes in Silver (clear anodized) as standard. Dark Bronze and Gold cost $400 more and take about 1 week to ship. You can also paint the kit. Sand or scuff the surface first so the paint adheres. Do not get paint on the neoprene gaskets.

Both options seal equally well once the Sound Lock Adjustable Door Seal Kit is installed. Industrial has a thicker, more durable casing, so it suits doors that see heavy use. The jamb seal casing is 1/2" deep in Standard Office and 7/8" deep in Industrial. Industrial adds $250 to a kit.

The Sound Lock Adjustable Door Seal Kit works on an exterior door but does require regular maintenance. Automatic door closers and flush bolts can often move further out from the door panel to make room for the seals. You only need a threshold with the Sound Lock Adjustable Door Seal Kit if the bottom seal drops onto an uneven or soft surface, such as carpet.
