RSIC-WHI Sound Isolation Hanger

RSIC-WHI hangers sit mid-wire between the structure and a wire-hung drywall grid ceiling. A rubber isolator in each hanger breaks the path that sound and vibration take from the structure into the ceiling. They work with wood, steel, or concrete structures. RSIC-WHI hangers are a strong fit for wire-hung drywall ceilings under a concrete slab, such as hotels, condos, and other multi-family buildings. They give excellent impact isolation (IIC) even when the floor above has no acoustical underlayment. That protects the rating if the flooring is replaced later. They also suit concrete and metal deck composite assemblies.

Choose the color whose load range includes the weight each hanger carries, ideally near the middle of the range. Each hanger works within 50% to 100% of its acoustical design load. To find your load per hanger, divide the total ceiling weight by the number of hangers. A 4' x 4' grid of 5/8" drywall is about 35 lbs per hanger, which calls for the Brown hanger.

At 4' x 4' o.c. spacing, plan on about 1 hanger for every 12 sq ft in a typical room. Divide the square footage by 14 for one very large room, by 10 for a smaller room, and by 8 for a very small room. Then check the weight per hanger against the color chart. The minimum ceiling drop for RSIC-WHI is about 12" from a concrete slab. The hangers can go lower, but tying the wire gets tight in a smaller space. For drops under 12", RSIC-DC04 fits 6" to 12" and RSIC-1 ADM fits 2-5/8" to 6".

Add up the weight per sq ft of every layer in your ceiling, then multiply by the area each hanger covers. At 4' x 4' spacing, each hanger covers 16 sq ft. The table lists common ceiling materials.

You need RSIC-WHI hangers in the right color, 12 gauge minimum annealed hanger wire, a drywall grid ceiling system, 5/8" drywall, and acoustical sealant. The grid's main beams and cross tees come from a local building supply or gypsum store. RSIC-WHI upgrades a standard wire-hung ceiling, so the rest of the build stays the same.

Space the hangers up to 4' x 4' o.c., with the first and last rows within 8" of the wall. Tie 12 gauge minimum annealed hanger wire through the wire loop on each hanger. Hang the drywall grid ceiling following the grid manufacturer's instructions. Seal the perimeter and any penetrations with acoustical sealant. The RSIC-WHI install guide shows the spacing layouts.

We recommend floating the ceiling perimeter, which means leaving it unattached to the walls. The RSIC-WHI assembly was acoustically tested that way. Seal the perimeter gap with acoustical sealant.

Yes, RSIC-WHI works with lay-in acoustic ceiling tile that has a ceiling tile backer or a high CAC rating. A backer, such as CelluZorbe HD Ceiling Tile Backer, handles the airborne path of sound. The hangers then handle the structure-borne path that the backer alone does not address.
