RSIC-1® EXT04 Sound Isolation Clips

RSIC-1 EXT04 is our adjustable ceiling clip for wood or steel joists. It mounts to the side of the joist and adjusts up to 4". That makes it a good fit for home theaters and other ceilings that need an open chase for new wires or anywhere plumbing pipes need clearance.

RSIC-1 EXT04 adjusts from 1/2" to 4" of depth at the joist attachment point. Use the low end for a low-profile install, and the high end to drop the ceiling below HVAC, plumbing, or electrical. The adjustment also levels an uneven ceiling plane.

Choose RSIC-1 EXT04 for ceilings with wood or steel joists. Choose RSIC-1 ADM for concrete ceilings, where it shoots into the slab. EXT04 is the better fit for wood or steel because it mounts to the side of the joist and adjusts up to 4".

RSIC-1 EXT04 supports up to 2 layers of 5/8" drywall at 24" x 48" o.c. It supports up to 3 layers at 16" x 48" o.c. Both spacings work with joists at 16" or 24" o.c.

RSIC-1 EXT04 clips go at 24" x 48" o.c. for 1 or 2 layers of 5/8" drywall, and at 16" x 48" o.c. for 3 layers. The clips mount to the sides of the joists. The first row sits within 8" of the wall at each end of a run. Call us at 1-800-679-8511 for an exact clip count for your ceiling.

Fasten RSIC-1 EXT04 clips to the sides of the joists, with the metal "L" bracket tight against each joist. Snap in the 25 gauge hat channel with a hemmed edge detail. Then screw 5/8" drywall to the channel, leaving a 1/4" gap around the perimeter. Fill the joist bays with insulation, since insulation is part of any good soundproof ceiling. Seal the perimeter and any penetrations with acoustical sealant. The RSIC-1 EXT04 install guide shows the spacing layouts.

You need RSIC-1 EXT04 clips, 25 gauge hat channel with a hemmed edge detail, screws, 5/8" drywall, and acoustical sealant. 22 gauge hat channel also works, and it does not need a hemmed edge. For wood joists, use #8 x 1-1/2" minimum coarse thread screws. For steel joists, use #8 x 9/16" minimum fine thread screws. The install guide lists the channel dimensions and details.
