Yes, RSIC-1 Retro clips are made to go over an existing drywall or plywood wall or ceiling. That means you can soundproof an existing wall or ceiling without tearing it out. Seal the existing surface with acoustical sealant first. Then fasten the clips through the drywall into the framing. The rest of the install is the same as the RSIC-1 clips.

RSIC-1 Retro includes a washer that goes between the clip's isolator and your existing drywall. The washer spreads the load, so the metal ferrule on a standard clip does not sink into soft gypsum board. RSIC-1 Retro is the clip for finished walls and ceilings. RSIC-1 is the clip for bare studs and joists. For most applications, we recommend the RSIC-1 unless removing the existing drywall isn't an option.

RSIC-1 Retro and its 25 gauge hat channel with a hemmed edge detail add about 1-3/4" of depth to your existing wall or ceiling. With 1 layer of new 5/8" drywall, the total added is about 2-1/4". With 2 layers, it is about 2-7/8".

For most installs, 1 layer of 5/8" drywall over RSIC-1 Retro is best. Installing a second layer adds roughly 20-30% more airborne noise reduction. RSIC-1 Retro supports up to 2 layers at 24" x 48" o.c. For best results, we recommend the RSIC-1 installed directly onto the framing, if you can remove the existing drywall.

You need RSIC-1 Retro clips, 25 gauge hat channel with a hemmed edge detail, screws, 5/8" drywall, glass fiber insulation, and acoustical sealant. For wood framing, use #8 x 3-1/8" to 4" coarse thread screws, reaching at least 1-1/2" into the framing. For steel framing, use #8 x 2-1/4" minimum fine thread screws, reaching at least 5/8" into the framing. Pick the screw length by the thickness of your existing drywall. Never fasten the clips with nails. The RSIC-1 Retro install guide lists the hat channel dimensions.

Seal the existing wall or ceiling with acoustical sealant. Fasten each clip through the existing drywall into the framing, with a Retro washer between the clip and the drywall. Snap the 25 gauge hat channel with a hemmed edge detail into the clips. Fill the new cavity with up to 1-5/8" insulation. On walls, set the new drywall on 1/4" floor shims and keep them in until every screw is in. Screw 5/8" drywall to the channel with that 1/4" gap around the perimeter, then seal that gap, too.
