Teslas have grown immensely in popularity since the company was founded in 2003. The Tesla Model Y is the world’s best-selling electric car, will likely be the best-selling car by revenue in 2022, and is set to be the best-selling car period by the end of 2023. The company has seen huge demand for the Model Y since they were released. In 2020, they sold only around 10,000 Model Ys, but that wasn’t due to lack of demand! In 2021, they sold more than 150,000 vehicles.
The approach to soundproofing a vehicle like a Tesla Model Y is a bit different than soundproofing a normal car. Have you ever heard a Tesla vrooming down your street? Exactly! Electric cars don’t have a gas powered engine (of course!).
Depending on the make/model and the speed of travel, the engine can be one of the loudest components of a gas powered car. As a result, soundproofing the engine compartment is the best way to reduce cabin noise, but in a Tesla, you won’t have to worry about that as much. However, just because the Tesla Model Y doesn’t have an engine, doesn’t mean that we never have customers reaching out for help soundproofing one. Without the engine, Model Y customers tend to be much more bothered by road noise and tire noise – which we can help you with as well!
Reducing Tesla Model Y Cabin Noise
With a Tesla Model Y, the loudest noises you’ll hear in the cabin comes from the tires and then road noise. Here are our top recommendations for soundproofing a Tesla Model Y.
Method #1 Spectrum in the Wheel Wells
Spectrum: 2 gallons of Spectrum in the 4 wheel wells is the most cost-effective and weight-conscious treatment you can do to reduce road noise and tire noise. We generally see a 3-5 decibel reduction with this treatment, and it doesn’t require any work inside the cabin! Just brush or spray on the Spectrum in 1mm layers to 3 total layers.
Method #2 Damplifier Pro + Luxury Liner Pro
- Damplifier Pro: 2mm thick sound deadening mat that can be used to decouple metal surfaces and prevent structural noise. It is far and away the best performing sound deadening mat per square foot of material used.
- Luxury Liner Pro: A dense sheet of vehicle mass loaded vinyl fused with closed cell foam. Perfect for sound blocking and thermal insulation.
Both of these products are included in our vehicle soundproofing package.
How to install Sound deadening material in a tesla model Y
Step One: Install a Layer of Damplifier Pro on Metal Surfaces
In every vehicle (including electric ones!), metal panels and parts will vibrate and produce loud structural noise. Damplifier Pro is our best solution for this. By installing the butyl rubber compound on the metal surfaces of your vehicle with at least 60% coverage, you can expect some serious reduction in structural noise. Install Damplifier Pro on your vehicle's floors, doors, roof, firewall, trunk, and hood. Once you stop the vibrations, you’ll stop the noise.
Step Two: Install Luxury Liner Pro as a Second Layer
Luxury Liner Pro is a very effective sound blocking product that can be used in various soundproofing projects. It is simply the best product to use in your Tesla Model Y if you want to block airborne noise from entering your cabin. The mass loaded vinyl is exceptionally dense, so it functions as an unbroken barrier between you and the engine, tires, or other road noise. Install Luxury Liner Pro on the floors, cabin side frunk, and trunk with as close to 100% coverage as possible for the best results.
Tesla Model Y Tire Noise Reduction Treatment
Let’s go back to that Spectrum treatment for a second. This is the best spray on sound deadening material on the market and is easy to apply. Apply the liquid sound deadener directly to the metal in the wheel well with 3 separate coats, each with 1mm of thickness. It can be used in combination with Damplifier Pro, Luxury Liner Pro, or used on its own!
Spectrum will reduce the amount of road noise and tire noise you’re hearing in the cabin, and make your ride in a Tesla Model Y that much more enjoyable. Combining this method of spraying Spectrum Spray Liquid Sound Deadener in the wheel wells with Luxury Liner Pro and Damplifier Pro on the surfaces of the Tesla will result in the best possible wheel well noise reduction and an impeccably quiet car.
Best Possible Noise Reduction for a Tesla Model Y
If you purchase an electric car, you expect it to be as stealthy as possible. While Tesla has a built in advantage for a quiet vehicle (no engine!), we know it’s not a perfectly quiet vehicle. There are strategies you can do to soundproof your Tesla Model Y, but what we’ve covered today are the materials we recommend the most often!
